The Luther Burbank football team stunned the No. 2 Grant Pacers with a 27-21 upset. It was perhaps the biggest stunner in a season of stunners as Grant (6-3, 4-1) lost to a Sacramento-area team for the first time in more than two years. The Pacers went 13-0 last season, and their two previous losses this year came against Bakersfield and Alta of Utah.

A wildfire that started June 24 ended up destroying 254 houses on the outskirts of South Lake Tahoe. The Angora Fire was the worst wildfire to strike the High Sierra basin in modern times.
