Backlit Sunflowers

Sunflowers face east after flowering to avoid sunburn in a field along Chiles Rd. in Davis, July 8, 2005. These hybrid sunflowers, ranging from 5 to 6 feet tall, are grown for oil. Travelers along Interstate 80 frequently stop to photograph the sunflowers. The sunflowers bloom about 70 days after planting. Harvesting is done two months after the sunflowers bloom.
